Ecce Domus Dei et Porta Coeli
2022, Sculpture
The work's starting point is the unsuccessful restoration of the Ecce Homo fresco, carried out by Cecilia Giménez*,* in the city of Borja, Spain, which distorted the image of Jesus and became a viral story on the internet in 2012.
The work intends to discuss the deconstruction of the figurative representation of the divine and create a new form of representation for it, so that spirituality and humanity become closer.
Made a priori from a ready-made, it mentions the title Ecce Domus Dei et Porta Cœli, which means “Behold the House of God and the Gate of Heaven”.
The theme permeates the artist's production, who lived her childhood in a convent in Belgium, where religious experience was strongly associated with punishment, martyrdom and rigidity. However, in the work, Maussen seeks to portray “God” as a “house”, whose surroundings are tender, “soft”, and the interior a mystery.
